Grammy-winning vocalist Mandisa, renowned for her appearance on season five of “American Idol,” passed away at 47, as confirmed by her spokesperson on Friday. Details surrounding her death remain undisclosed.

Mandisa, known for her uplifting messages, was discovered deceased in her Nashville residence, according to The Tennessean. She gained prominence after her stint on “American Idol,” ultimately earning a Grammy for Best Contemporary Christian Music Album in 2014 for her work on “Overcomer.”

Originally from Sacramento, California, Mandisa honed her talent in church and pursued vocal studies at American River College and Fisk University. Before her breakthrough on “American Idol,” she lent her vocals to artists like Shania Twain and Trisha Yearwood.

In 2017, she opened up about her battle with depression following the loss of her friend, Lakisha Mitchell, to breast cancer.

Reflecting on her struggles, Mandisa revealed, “It reached a critical point—I was on the brink. I came close to succumbing to the voice urging me to end it all.”

Regarding her battle with emotional eating, she shared, “It’s been a lifelong struggle.” Despite previously shedding over 120 pounds, she regained the weight, along with an additional 75 pounds, after the loss of her friend, Kisha.

Fortunately, with the support of friends and professional help, Mandisa sought intervention and began her journey to recovery.

Throughout her career, she released six studio albums, including her latest work, “Out of the Dark,” in 2017.
